Alifushi (Raa Atoll)

Alifushi is an inhabited island in Raa Atoll administrative division and geographically part of the Maalhosmadulu Atoll in the northern part of the Maldives. It is an island-level administrative constituency in north province, governed by the Alifushi Island Council.

This island is famous for its master boat builders. The skill and ability to produce the fine lines, curves and joins of the Dhoni (boat), has been passed on from generation to generation. Locals travel from all over the country to this islands to employ the skills of these master craftsmen, be it for the building of a simple fishing Dhoni or a luxury cruise vessel.

The boatyard at Alifushi blends tradition with modern techniques and skills in the building of boats. Here naval architects have modified the traditional design to build bigger vessels that make better use of diesel power and have the capacity for cold storage and refrigeration.
